Work & Play With A Utility Vehicle

If you’re a fan of motorcycles, you’re used to getting on your bike or ATV and going out to enjoy yourself. There’s nothing better than hitting the open road or a woodsy trail to forget about the stress of work.

Pete’s Cycles has another way for you to play, and in some cases work, and still enjoy the freedom and fun of a motorcycle. They’re called utility vehicles and are available from the leading names in the motorcycle business, like Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki.

Each of these vehicles is designed for the rugged demands of outdoor work and play – and they also function as excellent sources of transportation if you’re an avid hunter or fishermen transporting supplies and gear over a long distance.

Kawasaki’s offerings are tough, dependable and ready for anything you can throw at them. Divided into two classes, the first is known as the RUV and is perfect for someone who wants to have fun while they work. The Utility line, affectionately known as The Mule, are brawnier and sport a beefier design and ability to move heavy loads – along with up to four people.

The Polaris lineup is one of the deepest on the market, and includes models such as the Ranger for riders who need a workhorse to the Ranger RZR, a vehicle built for speed and fun. There’s also an entry for the youth market, and includes a parent-adjustable speed limiter and many other safety features. Limited Editions, in a variety of builds and colors, are also available for the dedicated enthusiast.

While Suzuki has only one utility vehicle, you can expect the same dedication to quality and craftsmanship in the Q.U.V. An advanced suspension system soaks up the bumps while pickup truck styling make it easy on the eyes – along with four wheel drive.

As anyone would suspect, the Yamaha contribution to this class of vehicles, the Rhino, combines the beauty of excellent engineering with the muscle of Yamaha’s engine and transmission. The Rhino is built for two and has adjustable piggyback shocks.

Working doesn’t have to be all about work – you can always inject some play so that the day goes by faster – and when you’re using any of these vehicles you’ll be taking advantage of industry knowledge and experience to make the job easier.

How to Ride Responsibly

It’s a well known fact that sportsmen who call the outdoors their playground are seen as more responsible for their actions.

Surfers are all concerned about the cleanliness of the water, hunters talk about making sure the woodlands are preserved, even golfers take an interest in keeping the environment clean so their favorite courses remain pristine!

Dirt bikers and ATV enthusiasts are no different – although sometimes we get a black eye because the actions of a few tend to be associated with all of us – kind of like a few rotten apples spoiling the entire barrel.

Riding responsibly doesn’t really take a great deal of extra effort, in fact most of the recommendations by groups like Tread Lightly are formed around the basics of smart riding – a few of them are below:

• Travel only in areas open to all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use.
• Minimize wheel spin. On switchbacks, avoid roosting around the apex of the turn when climbing or brake-sliding during descent, both of which gouge the trail. Drive over, not around obstacles to avoid widening the trail.
• Slow down when sight lines are poor. Cross streams only at designated fording points, where the trail crosses the stream.
• Comply with all signs and respect barriers.
• Buddy up with two or three riders, reducing vulnerability if you have an accident or breakdown. Designate meeting areas in case of separation.
• When winching, always inspect your equipment, use the right winch for the situation, find a good secure anchor and never winch with less than five wraps of wire rope around the drum.
• When using a tree as an anchor, use a wide tree strap to avoid damaging the trunk of the tree.
• Listening to headphones or ear buds can make it difficult to hear and communicate with other recreationists. In some areas it is illegal to operate ATVs with both ears covered.
• Don’t mix riding with alcohol or drugs.

Riding with care when you’re on public, or private, land is the mark of a concerned and experienced motorcyclist. By showing the rest of the general public that we’re as aware of nature and the environment as other outdoor sportsmen, we’ll gain the respect and admiration that we deserve.

As always, if you’re looking for more advice about riding, or finding new people to ride with, visit any of our stores!

Can-Am I Am!

The beauty of the motorcycle market is there is something for everyone – whether it’s a sleek, screaming street bike or a muddy ATV that churns up the trails – no matter what you want, Pete’s can help you out.

In an effort to make sure our customers get what they want, we’re happy to carry the popular line of Can-Am three-wheel motorcycles. You might have seen the commercials on television, or seen a picture on our Facebook page, but you can’t truly appreciate these beauties until you see them in person.

And then climb aboard one for a test ride. After that, you’ll be sold!

We carry two different models of the Can-Am: the RT Roadster and the RS Roadster. The RT is designed for the rider who wants to go out on the open highway and travel for miles in comfort and style.

Offering the same size engine and manual transmission, the RS Roadster has the heart of a racer and the body of an athlete. Stylized lines combined with 106 horsepower engine will have you racing down the roads and turning heads.

Pete’s Cycles stocks both models of the Can-Am and even if you’ve never climbed aboard a motorcycle in your life, you’ll feel right at home. The bikes feature easy to learn manual transmissions and their three-wheel design means you won’t have to worry about losing your balance.

The requirements for getting a license to drive a Can-Am in Maryland are the same as qualifying for your motorcycle license, but once you’ve taken the course you’ll be ready to cruise the back roads and beltways.

The creators of the Can-Am are the same people who brought the Sea Doo and Ski Doo, along with other legendary watercraft, to the world. Founded by J.A. Bombardier in 1942, the company’s dedication to quality craftsmanship, expert design and execution, and a dedication to fun are all found in the Can-Am.

Join the ranks of Can-Am riders, who are finding that these easy to handle, and fun to ride machines are perfect for the morning commute or a long weekend vacation. You’ll certainly be happier when you realize that your visits to the gas station are much farther between than when you were driving a car or SUV.

Fourth of July – A Day to Ride and Remember

The Fourth of July weekend is coming, and while we’re all looking forward to getting out on our bikes and riding, we wanted to reflect on what the Fourth of July means.

In 1776, when our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, they were probably very happy – for about a minute – and then they realized they had thrown down the gauntlet and invited one of the most powerful nations on Earth to a brawl.

The next few years would be full of turmoil, violence and death, but in the end a ragtag group of men and women who valued independence more than their lives did the impossible – they beat the British army and navy and won their freedom.

Over the next century, America would tear itself apart in a civil war that resulted in millions dead, millions more wounded and lives and the country shattered almost beyond repair.

Again, our nation moved forward and swelled its ranks as immigrants from all over the world flooded her shores. While the reception they received wasn’t always the warmest, they stuck around and helped build the nation.

Prosperity would be followed by economic times that again threatened to destroy America, but the resilience of her people kept the country alive and prosperity returned.

Two world wars would follow, and America would find herself as the world’s strongest and soundest nation. Internal strife would visit her again and again, but always in the end the nation stood strong.

From the moment we declared our independence until this very day, Americans have known that to keep something that precious alive and strong, it would require sacrifice, work and the ability to remember what our forefathers had committed themselves to almost three hundred years ago.

So this Fourth of July, before you climb onto your bike, or hit the beach or sit back and watch fireworks, remember what it is to be an American – and the sacrifices that this nation made to get where we are today.

That spirit has carried the United States of America through her darkest days, and will continue to do so well into the future.

Happy Fourth of July, from Pete’s Cycles.

Our 6th Annual Mason-Dixon Motorcycle Run – June 5!

Pete’s Cycle is sponsoring its 6th Annual Mason Dixon Motorcycle Ride on Sunday, June 5 that will feature a brand new route and new roads.

We’re teaming up with Pete’s Baltimore RAT Pack and heading through scenic Maryland and southern Pennsylvania for a day of riding for a great cause, Camp Sunrise.

Here’s the deal, grab your street bike – we don’t care if it’s a Honda, Kawasaki, Triumph, Harley or Indian – and head on over to our Pete’s Cycle location on 7511 Belair Road. Registration begins at 8 and we ride at 9!

The run takes us through northern Maryland and then through some of the Civil War sites such as:
• Gettysburg
• Antietam
• South mountain Battlefield
• Harpers Ferry
• Monocacy Battlefield

The cost for registration is $10 per bike and there’s no additional cost for passengers. Before we ride, we’ll hold a raffle for all participants, with some very cool prizes.

Half of the proceeds we raise will go to benefitting Camp Sunrise. Pete’s is a supporter of Camp Sunrise throughout the year, and we hold events like this to raise money, and awareness, for this cause.

In addition to seeing some of the most beautiful scenery in the area, your participation will help out kids who are already struggling with some very serious health problems.

We hope to see you out there – if you have any questions you can call 410-663-8556 or email BaltimoreRAT@aol.com.

See you on Sunday!

Scooter School is In Session at Pete’s!

Pete’s Cycles is definitely heaven for motorcycle, dirtbike and ATV enthusiasts – our showrooms are fully stocked with the latest models, makes and all the accessories a rider would ever need.

But did you know that we also stock scooters from Honda, Kymco, Suzuki and Yamaha? And just to be clear, these aren’t the scooters you remember from growing up, these machines are manufactured by the leaders of the industry and provide excellent transportation for getting around the city or county.

Starting off with the Honda, Pete’s is proud to offer the Honda PCX. This scooter boasts room for two riders and a 125 inch cubic engine that will put you out in front of the pack. Excellent gas mileage rounds out the package, along with plenty of storage room.

The Kymco Super 8 150 boasts a dazzling blue and yellow color scheme, along with a price tag below $2,500. The four-stroke engine is started electrically and has an automatic transmission.

Suzuki’s Burgman 400 manages to pack convenience, performance and style into one spiffy looking machine. A mammoth 400 cubic engine generates plenty of power while remaining stingy on gas. An automatic transmission makes city driving a breeze and the storage capacity is hard to beat.

Function is always a determining factor, but form isn’t far behind, and Yamaha’s look back to the past in the Vino Classic is bursting with clean lines and plenty of style. The powerplant in this beauty is a 49 cubic centimeter four stroke engine that tools along at a decent clip, while saving money at the gas pump. Cool style and even cooler gas bills, that’s a winning combination.

These four models are only a taste of the scooter selection you’ll find at any Pete’s Cycles location. If you’re living the city life, or even motoring around the suburbs, scooters are an affordable way to get around.

Before you go shopping for a scooter, here are a few suggestions.

1. Look for a scooter that is going to fit your lifestyle. Do you want style and speed or more storage space?

2. Will this be your main mode of transportation? If the answer is yes, consider one of the larger models, you’ll be spending a little more but you’ll appreciate your investment.

3. Price range – most models retail at under $10,000 and the money you’ll save on gas and insurance is definitely a plus. Let your budget be your guide.

4. Safety is always a main concern, and you’ll want to check out a bike’s size and safety rating in relation to where you’ll be riding. And as always – WEAR YOUR HELMET.

5. Let’s be honest, style counts! Are you looking for a sleek, modern scooter that makes an impression, or do you want a model that looks more old school?

Riders – Camp Sunrise Needs Your Generosity

Motorcycle riders and enthusiasts – whether street or dirt – are known for their generosity. Whether it’s collecting toys at the holidays or donating their time and money to preserve trails, motorcyclists get it done.

With summer approaching, we’re asking all of our customers and their friends to come out to Pete’s and help support Camp Sunrise.

This facility enables children with cancer to enjoy themselves, and leave their worries behind.
The camp is held once a year for one week in August at Camp Hidden Valley, located in White Hall, Maryland.

Camp Sunrise is free of charge and open to children between the ages of four and 18. The goal of the camp is to teach campers team-building skills, self confidence and the value of friendship. Counselors and on site medical staff donate their time and talents – the rest of the camp is supported by the generosity of others.

Pete’s Cycle is a supporter of Camp Sunrise, and we’re asking our customers and fellow riders to consider donating whatever they might be able to spare. You can visit the camp website here and make a donation or visit one of our stores.

Thanks in advance to all of our fellow riders and customers – we know we can count on you!

Pete’s & Honda Team up for BIG Savings

Ever since we opened our doors, the Honda line of motorcycles, ATVs and other vehicles have been one of our most popular lines – for good reason.

Honda, affectionately known as Big Red to its fans, has consistently produced vehicles that are well made, dependable and able to withstand the rigors of the highway and the backcountry.

That’s why on March 26, we’ll once again team up with Honda for their “I Wanna Ride” event to celebrate our 48th year as a Honda dealer. This event boasts big savings on select Honda ATVs, scooters and motorcycles.

If you’ve always wanted to feel the experience of climbing aboard a Honda and tackling the great outdoors – here’s your chance. This event is being held at the Baltimore and Bel Air stores and promises to be a busy day.

With spring right around the corner, and the days getting longer, you’ll have more time to roar down the open highway, or trundle along the trails and back roads on your new bike. Current Honda owners, here’s your chance to get that upgraded bike you’ve always wanted.

We’ll be looking for you on Saturday, March 26th and plan to get there early, because the first 50 people get a FREE Honda t-shirt!

Two For The Road

Early March in Maryland isn’t a guarantee that Old Man Winter has packed up and headed home, but the Orioles are in spring training and kids are practicing lacrosse in the front yard, so it’s safe to start dreaming about riding on the open road.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a street bike, or own one and want to try something different, Pete’s Cycle is proud to introduce two new bikes that bring a great deal to the table.

First up is the new 2012 Honda Goldwing – touring bike aficionados know that Honda and touring bikes are synonymous. There’s nothing like riding in total comfort, and experiencing the quality engineering and performance of a Honda.

The manufacturer offers this Gold Wing in four distinct performance package options, each with features like Premium Surround Audio; XM® Radio with Navigation, Traffic, and Weather; Trip Planner, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, ABS, heated grips and seat, and even one with the industry's first airbag.

Upgrades and additions to this year’s model include:
• A trip planner that’s quicker and more intuitive, with a GPS system that downloads information faster.
• Revised bodywork providing increased lower body wind protection
• New seat material
• iPod® connectivity
• XM programming including NavTraffic® and NavWeather™ features help riders stay on course and ahead of bad weather.

Another model available, and a totally different breed from the Goldwing, is Triumph’s Tiger 800XC. This adventure bike sports brawny tire designed to handle the rough stuff, and an extended suspension that cries, “Just bring it!” to any kind of terrain.

The Tiger is powered by an 800 cc version of Triumph’s Triple, which delivers 95 hp at 9300 rpm. The XC sports wire-spoke wheels with Nissin brakes and optional ABS, which can be turned off for off road riding.

If you’re looking for a bike that travels flat out fast on the road, and is ready to bang it around on the trails, the Tiger is the answer. European styling and grace mixed with American brawn and durability, that’s what it takes to be a Tiger.

These and other models are available through Pete’s Cycle; we offer the highest quality merchandise with expert knowledge. For more information, contact Pete’s at one of our three locations:

Super Effort for Daytona Super Cross

The first weekend of March promises to be full of men on machines, flying through the air as they compete in the Daytona Super Cross at Daytona International Speedway.

The field promises a great deal of talent, and those dirt devils will need everything they’ve got as they take on a course designed by motocross legend Ricky Carmichael, a 15 time AMA champion.

The legend on two wheels promises riders like Chad Reed, defending champion Ryan Villopoto, James Stewart, Trey Canard and Davi Millsaps plenty of challenges as they race around the gigantic course.

So what does it take to create a dirt track where normally a flat infield stands? Besides tons of dirt, an army of heavy earth moving equipment is enlisted to push, pile, move and mold the dirt into an adrenaline pumping thrill ride.

Here’s how the numbers break down in preparation for the race:

• 4 Number of tractors to spread the dirt (1 loader, 1 crawler, 2 skid steer)

• 12 Number of dump trucks used to transport loads of dirt

• 26 Number of jumps on the track

• 210 Number of dump truck loads of dirt used to build the course on the tri-oval grass

• 128 Number of man-hours needed to complete the construction of the course

• 420 Number of 2x9 Styrofoam blocks used for safety along the course

Riding to Capitol Hill

A few weeks ago, we talked about the Kids Just Want to Ride Act of 2011, which was introduced into Congress on January 25 by Representative Denny Rehberg. The act is designed to remedy the ban on kid-sized motorcycles and ATVs that resulted from the passing of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act in 2009.

Both the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) have been working with state, local and other national groups to help support the act.

“Congress knows that the risk to children comes from banning youth models, not from the lead in metal parts, and there now is a will to solve this problem once and for all,” said Paul Vitrano, MIC’s general counsel. “We urge Congress to stop the ban by either lowering the age range of ‘children’s products’ to age 6 and under or granting a categorical exemption for youth ATVs and motorcycles, as provided in Representative Denny Rehberg’s bill.”

The US House of Representatives Submcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade held hearings today to review the act. The MIC has worked nonstop to focus Congress’ attention on the unintended ban on youth model ATVs and motorcycles resulting from the CPSIA’s lead content provisions – and the safety risks that the ban presents to youth riders – and submitted a letter for the hearing.

While the House of Representatives reviews the information in front of them, there’s still time for concerned motorcycle enthusiasts to voice their opinion. Visit the "Stop The Ban Now" website where the MIC has posted links that lead you directly to your representative in Congress. The Stop the Ban now website also containes videos from several professional motorcycle riders, including Robbie Maddison.

Waiting for the Sun

February is here and the winter doldrums are in full effect – there’s plenty of snow, ice, cold winds and rain – but the sun has been noticeably absent.

So what can you do if you’re tired of cold winter riding?

There’s always the option of taking a trip to some place warm and sunny, but you can’t bring your bike with you. Imagine getting it through security!

Here are a few projects you can do while waiting for the winter winds to finish blowing.

Road trips:
Consider planning a road trip for the spring or early summer. A long cruise filled with side trips and sightseeing is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. Google Maps makes this project easy and interesting – all you need is a place to start and your final destination.

Maintenance
Making sure your bike is in top shape is an almost daily task, but there’s always that one project you never got around to, or just avoided. Reserve some time and go over every inch of your bike – pay special attention to the condition of your wheels. As always, don’t forget the drive train, engine, frame and electrical systems.

Upgrades
Whether you’re a street rider or an off road enthusiast, there’s always a special feeling you get from tweaking your ride. Take a moment to think when you said, “Wow, if only I had that special part on my bike.” No time like the present to purchase and install it! If your Christmas money has been spent, tax refund time isn’t too far in the future.

New Ride
Maybe it’s time to consider purchasing a new motorcycle – there’s nothing like having a brand new bike in your garage as you count down the days to good weather. Plus, there’s always that break in the cold that lets you get out and ride! Pete’s has the latest models for street and dirt, and we also stock a variety of previously owned bikes that fit any budget.
If cabin fever is getting you down, take a ride to one of our locations and stroll around! We’re always ready to talk motorcycles and riding with our customers!

Let Your Voice Be Heard! Kids Just Want to Ride Act Introduced in Congress!

You may not know it, but back in 2008, provisions in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) effectively banned the sale of small displacement recreational vehicles due to overly restrictive lead content standards.

So what does that mean in plain, every day English?

The ban effectively killed the ATV market for children, the manufacturers couldn’t produce the smaller bikes and parents who wanted their kids to experience the fun and freedom of an ATV had to purchase larger bikes. Of course, their larger size made them harder for smaller children to effectively ride.

The Kids Just Want to Ride Act was introcuded by Representative Denny Rehberg (MT) in the US House of Representatives on January 25 and it asks for legislative exemption for youth-model motorcycles from the lead provisions in the CPSIA.

So what can you do?

Click on this link and contact your Representative and let them know how you feel about this bill! You can also call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-225-3121 and ask for your Representative by name or visit the Rights section of the AMA website.

Most politicians don’t know about the majority of legislation that is introduced, when they hear from their constituents, it makes an impact.

Getting To Point B

When you own a motorcycle, getting to Point B is half the fun. You’re not cooped up in a car, radio blasting and kids shouting, missing roadside attractions and wondering “When are we going to get there?”

A motorcycle ride exercises all of your senses, and makes you feel in touch with the road and your bike. Hopping on your bike and cruising around is a great way to spend the day, but planning a ride has its rewards.

Of course, you need a destination – whether it’s a park museum or restaurant – because where you’ll ultimately wind up is important as getting there.

After you’ve chosen your destination, get online and visit Google Maps – the most detailed, and accurate, mapping services available. Besides providing satellite imagery that helps in preparing for your ride, you’ll also see a tab marked “directions.”

Google Maps provides you with the straightest route, but by moving the blue route line around, you’ll be able to plan exactly where you want to go. It’s a great way to travel roads you’ve never ridden on, and see landmarks and other points of interest.

Now that you know where you’re going and how you’re getting there, it’s time to gather  your friends and plan the day. Early morning departures give you the entire day to ride, but can be tough on the night owls. Mid day in the summer months means dealing with the heat, while an evening ride provides cooler temperatures.

One important thing to note is that if you make your meeting place in public, check it out in advance to ensure it can handle a group of motorcycles – busy traffic patterns, small parking lots and traffic congestion won’t get your ride off to a good start.

The next step is easy – get on your bike and ride!

Plan in advance for any side trips, and the ever popular bathroom breaks. If you have novices in your group, remember that they might need a break quicker than the veterans.

Once you’ve reached your destination, enjoy the time with your biking buddies. Sure, it’s great to have finally gotten to your end point, but getting there was most of the fun!

Remember to ride safely!

Keeping Warm On a Winter’s Ride

Riding can be done in almost any type of weather, whether it’s an enjoyable, and safe, experience depends on a variety of factors. Now that we’re deep into winter, don’t spend the days wishing for warmer weather, get out and ride!

The first item on your winter checklist is to make sure you’re dressed properly for the ride. That means boots that are insulated, heavy pants, layers of clothes on your torso, and a face mask attached to your goggles.

Perhaps the most important body part you’re going to have to cover is your hands – they’re responsible for gas, brake and in some cases clutch. Frozen digits are too numb to respond and make for a hard day’s riding, and in some extreme cases can lead to minor frostbite.

Find a pair of gloves that aren’t too thick and are built for riding. Thanks to technology, there are plenty of gloves that are thin but warm. Remember that you might be wearing these gloves for an extended period of time, so comfort should be part of your equation.

Your final step should be protecting your eyes from sun glare and the cold air. Both of these elements combine to create fatigue and pain that turns a fun day riding into a miserable experience.

When choosing your goggles, look for polarized lenses which reduce glare. Take a hint from skiers and snowboarders, they prefer amber or yellow colored lenses to bring out the contrast in snowy fields and other surroundings.

Riding in any condition takes preparation and time – but when you’re out with your friends, shooting up rooster tails of powdered snow, you won’t be thinking about the beach!
