The 1000 Horsepower Castrol Rocket-Soon to be the World's Fastest Motorcycle?

Yup, you read that title correctly: the World’s Fastest Motorcycle!! Well, not quite yet for the Castrol Rocket, but it looks like the 400 mpg glass ceiling for motorcycle speed records is going to be broken.

Officially the brain child of Matt Markstaller’s Hot Rod Conspiracy, with some help by Carpenter Racing Engines, the 1000 horsepower Castrol Rocket was designed for one purpose—beating the existing 376 mph record, set in 2010 by Rocky Robinson. The Castrol Rocket did visit Bonneville last August, but serious attempts at a speed record were thwarted by not not-so-good weather conditions and some tuning issues.

With so much of the focus these days going to the world’s fastest computer, or world’s fastest cell phone processor, it’s good to see people valuing what could be called the original “arms race”—the fastest thing on two wheels. And yet today’s motorcycles have perhaps more in common with rockets and airplanes than, for example, an original Curtiss V-8, which set the land speed record in 1907 at a “whopping” 136 mpg. Click here to learn more about the Castrol Rocket.

While here at Pete’s Cycle we cannot promise you’ll break any land records with our machines, we can promise that whether you are traveling by road, dirt or water, we can get you that adrenaline buzz you need to start out the new year. That is a guarantee we can stand behind. Make 2014 the year for Speed.

Come see the New Suzuki KingQuad 400 Lineup

We can pretty much thank Suzuki for the 4-wheeled ATV. It truly was the “First on 4 Wheels,” as the saying goes. The year was 1983 when Suzuki first introduced the now classic LT-125, a modest machine by today's standards, but groundbreaking for its time. Prior to that, it was a 3-wheeled world. Thirty years later, they are still a top competitor. Their new Suzuki KingQuad 400 lineup, available at all Pete's Cycle locations, exhibits just what has kept Suzuki in the business for so long.

Whether you are taking it for a joyride through the hills, on a short hunting trip or hauling the logs in your backyard, this machine has a sporty edge combined with the muscle to complete the difficult jobs. The KingQuad 400 lineup also comes equipped with a new digital speedometer, a fuel-injected 376cc four-stroke, and industrial strength front and rear carrying racks will allow you to carry just about anything, for as long as you need to. And those are just a few of its new features.

At Pete's, we're proud to carry the top Suzuki ATVs. Come on in to any one of three Pete’s Cycle locations—Baltimore, Bel Air, Severna Park--or visit our home page by clicking here.

Consider a Snow Blower for the 2013 Winter Season!

According to predictions, Maryland is set to have a frigid winter and a heavy helping of snow. And it’s important to start preparing for what lies ahead. For starters, leave the snow shovel hanging in the garage and let the latest model Honda Snow blower do all the work. For instance, the HS724TA Track Drive comes with easy start technology, 24” clearing width, and the ability to move upwards of 50 tons of snow per hour!

Whether or not you need to clear your driveway or your parking lots, there is always a machine to match your needs. Prices range from $699 to  $3,000. Click here to see the full range of options.

At Pete’s we can also outfit just about any ATV or side by side with a variety of all-purpose snow plows, and we can guarantee your back will thank you for it! Prices start at $497.

Be sure your machine runs perfectly in Spring! Come on in to any one of three Pete’s Cycle locations—Baltimore, Bel Air, Severna Park—and we would be happy to keep you up-to-date with all the right information and prepared in keeping you and your cycles safe through the winter. Winterizing a Motorcycle

Winter is coming fast! And it’s time to start thinking about how to store your machine over the snowy season. Remember that an engine’s biggest enemy is moisture on its inside. In other words—corrosion. Especially vulnerable are the piston rings, cylinder walls, and valve seats.

Click here for some great advice and steps you need to take to winterize your machine. Anyone can do it. And, believe me, it’s worth it. Be sure your machine runs perfectly in Spring!

Before you begin, you’ll need a few items, such as cleaning cloths, spark plug wrench, a trickle battery charger, four or five quarts of high quality oil, new oil filter, oil can, and so on. Definitely make a trip to any one of three Pete’s Cycle locations—Baltimore, Bel Air, Severna Park—and we would be happy to keep you up-to-date with all the right information and prepared in keeping you and your cycles safe through the winter. Tips for Winterizing a Jet Ski

As your favorite lake starts to ice up with the coming of fall, it’s time to winterize your jet ski to make sure that it will be ready to go for that first summer jaunt next year.  To ensure that you will be riding the waves and not getting the Jet Ski mechanically up to speed, take the following easy steps to winterize your aquatic toys.

Although the Jet Ski is going into storage, it should go in fully gassed to avoid condensation from forming in the tank.  Additionally, adding a fuel stabilizer will keep the fuel from going bad over the winter.  In particularly intemperate areas it is recommended that you add anti-freeze to the cooling system to protect the vehicle from causing severe damage to the motor.  Lubricating the vessel will help prevent corrosion and repel moisture from damaging the internal workings of the machine.

With the inside of the machine protected, you will also want to give the vessel a thorough washing and cleaning to make sure that stains don’t remain permanent fixtures.  Be sure to fully dry the vessel inside and out to remove any water from the hull.  Finally, a good coat of wax will protect the finish while in storage.  Also, to get the spark you need to get going next summer, you should remove the battery for safe storage.  It’s also suggested that you invest in a trickle charger to keep your battery topped off

Petes Cycle has a great promotion going on now, to assist you in winterizing your Jet Ski. Call any of our three locations for more info. Talk to you soon!

Tips for Cool Weather Bike Riding

You didn’t buy that bike so that it would stay in the garage the first time the temperatures begin to dip.  Fall is perhaps one of the greatest times of the year to jump on the back of your motorcycle and hit the open road, but to fully enjoy that next road trip you need to properly gear up for that next adventure.  As anyone who has ever logged some cold weather miles can tell you, cold weather makes for an uncomfortable ride which can quickly sour you on the process.  That need not be the case.
Gearing up properly for a fall ride requires staying insulated and beating the wind.  Happily, there are a number of both low tech and high tech solutions designed to make that next riding experience pleasurable.  There is no shortage of high tech solutions that may filter the wind at the risk of straining your bank account.  Towards that end, the truly die-hard can outfit themselves with heated gear that plugs into their clothing and is run off the bike’s battery.  While it’s certainly a nice way to travel, a snug fitting jacket, scarves, gloves, and hats are an excellent way to extend the riding season into the colder seasons.

The History of Pete's Cycle & The 75th Anniversary

Pete’s Cycle was founded by Walter C. Leach Sr., nickname Pete, hence the name Pete’s Cycle, in 1938 out of his parent’s basement on Harford Road in Baltimore.  He started out repairing bicycles and building flower boxes.  Remember this was during the depression.

Pete went off to WWII, while away his father ran the business.  After WWII, Pete became a Schwinn bicycle dealer and at this time started into motorized vehicles.  First was the Whizzer then Indian motorcycles, AJS, BSA, Matchless, all at the original store.  He opened a second store in Towson in the 1950’s which also sold Evinrude outboard engines and  had a hobby store.  In the late 1950’s he sold Maruchan, Laverda, Lambretta, Bultaco, Vespa, Gillera, American Eagle and Cushman.  He became a Honda dealer on July 9, 1963.

He opened the Bel Air store in 1967 and the Severna Park store in 1970.  At one time Pete’s Cycle had 7 stores with either bicycles or motorcycles.  Thru the 70’s and 80’s he picked up Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki.

In the mid 1980’s, Pete went into semi-retirement.  His children started running the business on a full time basis.  In April of 2000, Pete’s Cycle moved out of it’s original location of 62 years, to a much larger store on Bel Air Road in Baltimore.  Today, Pete’s Cycle has 3 locations still run by his 5 children.  We are very proud to be celebrating our 75th year.

Pete’s has a full stock of many brands that include Honda, Yahmaha, Kawasaki, Kymco, Polaris, Sea-Doo, Susuki, Triumph, Spyder & Victory. Many of Pete’s Brands carry ATV’s, UTV’s, Cruisers, Dirt, Street, Scooters, Generators & PWC’s.
